Wolf 359 is a star located approximately 7.8 light years away from Earth. As a red dwarf, the star is reddish in color, and significantly smaller and dimmer than the Sun. Although the star exists in real life, within the context of Wolf 359, the U.S.S. Hephaestus space station is currently orbiting around it, and has been for some time.
Accidentally, Officer Doug Eiffel began transmitting his daily logs into outer space, which were picked up by an extraterrestrial force that seems to exist within Wolf 359 itself, or at least transmit through it. In "Do No Harm" the star turned blue and began increasing in size, and in "Knock, Knock" and "Who's There?" an unidentifiable entity made contact with the Hephaestus. By listening to Eiffel's transmissions, they patched together a basic understanding of the English language and used his voice to talk to the crew, although they seemed to have mistranslated the word "communicate" to mean something altogether more sinister. They dubbed themselves "Dear Listeners" after Eiffel's habit of recording his logs like a radio show.
The star returns to its original red color in the episode 54 "The Watchtower" after Bob has finished communicating with Eiffel. For a brief moment in the finale, "Brave New World", Cutter manages to get the Dear Listeners to reopen communication with him, and the star turns blue again. Once communication is closed a few minutes later, the star turns red again, this time for good.
